Position: Construction Services Chief Engineering Technician

S&ME, Inc., a geoprofessional and design consulting firm, is seeking a full-time Chief Engineering Technician in our Orlando, Florida location. The individual will be responsible for the following:


  • Coordination of field activities, observations, and testing results on construction projects, and their conformance with (or deviation from) project plans and specifications;
  • Review of civil, architectural, and structural plans and specifications in preparation of assigning field staff to perform observations on construction sites;
  • Field and laboratory testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry mortar/grout for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and/or project specifications;
  • Daily use of Metafield, and/or other field and laboratory information management systems, for recording of testing results;
  • Communication of field and laboratory testing results with Construction Services and Geotechnical Project Management staff, general contractors, and clients;
  • Mentoring, coaching, and training of less experienced technician and professional staff in the areas of testing and inspection;
  • Review of civil, architectural, and structural plans and specifications in preparation of cost estimates and proposals;
  • Participation in local Business Development efforts including obtaining and maintenance of local clients;
  • Assist in the planning, monitoring, and/or management of project budgets;
  • Calibration of field and laboratory equipment to industry codes and standards, as well as maintenance of a field and laboratory accreditation program.



  • High school diploma/GED required, vocational training in construction materials testing preferred;
  • 12 or more years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials required, including at least 5 years on projects of significant size and complexity;
  • ASTM Supervising Lab Technician and/or Supervising Field Technician experience, preferred;
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing), using the English language, required;
  • Proficient with MS Word and Excel software, as well as PDF and electronic document development;
  • Ability to routinely lift 40 to 50 lbs. (field/laboratory samples and equipment), required;
  • An understanding of professionalism and tact, relative to interaction with all members of the design and construction team, including (but not limited to) site laborers, project owners, site superintendents, architects, design engineers, and project managers;
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (Company will provide Personal Protective Equipment and inclement weather gear, as appropriate);
  • Ability to work and maneuver equipment (such as a loaded wheelbarrow) on uneven ground and around active construction sites;
  • Willingness to travel out-of-town (typically overnight) for short duration assignments.


Advanced Levels of Certification (In Multiple Fields) Required (Examples):

  • American Concrete Institute (ACI)
    • Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician; Special Inspector; Masonry Field Testing; Aggregate Testing.
  • FDOT CTQP TESTING Certifications in the fields of Earthworks, Asphalt, and Concrete.
  • FDOT CTQP INSPECTION Certifications such as Pile Driving, Drilled Shaft, and Pre-stress Concrete.
  • FDOT CTQP MANAGEMENT Certifications such as Quality Control Manager, and Final Estimates
  • FDEP INSPECTION Certification in Storm-water Erosion Control.




Pay rate is based on level of experience and active certifications. S&ME offers a Credential Incentive Program to assist employees in obtaining additional certifications.


This is a full-time position with competitive pay based on experience. Successful candidate must meet requirements of the company's Fleet Management Program, Substance Policy and Reference check program.
